|Kirby dots (also known as Kirby Krackle) were legendary comic artist Jack Kirby's technique for illustrating explosions and other cool effects. Kirby dots are also used to great effect by Hellboy creator Mike Mignola.
This plug-in fills your image with Kirby dots automatically -- you can draw your own image to Kirby-ize, or use a pre-existing image or photo. You can specify the size, color and randomness of the dots. It's handy for making 3D textures, backgrounds, etc.
Download the Kirby Dots plug-in here. This plug-in can be used with Photoshop 6 or greater, Windows only. We're working on a Mac version. SERIOUSLY, DON'T EMAIL THAT WE ARE MAC-HATING MEANIES I WAS USING AN APPLE COMPUTER BEFORE MANY OF YOU WERE BORN DON'T EVEN START WITH ME PEOPLE. This plug-in is freeware, provided "as-is". If you make something cool with it, let us know and we'll post it here.
|You can also add Kirby dots to an animation. The animation at right (see bigger AVI version) was made by Kirby-izing a Pyromania movie clip. The filter was applied to each frame using a Photoshop Action.
Below are a few more clips of the Kirby dots dancin'. The first one is from a Particle Illusions animation, and the other two are from Pyromania clips:
